Description

The halberd has been a staple in medieval warfare for years. The combined functions of an axe and a spear make this a deadly armament. This particular halberd, the 16th Century Spanish Halberd, by Marto, is a replica of one such halberds design. Perhaps the greatest recognition of the use of a halberd was in the Spanish military formation known as the tercio, a formation that gained notoriety and fear thanks to its incredibly effectiveness. The handle of this halberd is made of wood, ornamented with fringed fabric plumes. The head is made in cast metal with a frontal axe-head with a double-curved edge, a rear talon, and a central straight spike. The etched floral motif decorations show the 16th Century Spanish Halberd, by Marto, for what it really is – a parade arm, an item meant more for decoration then for use.
